Role of Culture in Suicide Prevention

The article “Advancing Prevention Research on the Role of Culture in Suicide Prevention”, appears to be in quotations, citations through other people’s observation, which is generally is an inexpensive form of research.  This article best reflects on participant observation as it is based on other people’s observations and studies and the authors of this study is just quoting for rearranging the research to get the point of view across.  The realistic factor is that all groups of Americans, whether it would be American Indian, Alaskan, Native youth, Latino or African youth and European American youth show that some of the reasons for these individuals groups to use suicide as an answer, the one main factor is that all of these groups have a fairly high rate of suicide.

The breaking down of the research orientation in sociology from page 21 shows me that the article is based on positive sociology, which is the researchers used neutral observation.  The author of the article was observing the research of other people, in which he presented proper citation.  The only thing that I found challenging to me was that the author did not express his own point of view.  He seemed to do that through the other observers.  All-in-all it was a good article and I had gathered good information from it.

Culture Shock assignment

If you were visiting and studying the Yanomamo, describe what you would have done to prepare yourself for possible culture shock.

To prepare myself for the possible culture shock with the Yanomamo, the first thing I would do is to remain calm and show no fear.  I would have let my guide approach the tribesmen first so I would feel more comfortable knowing that the tribesmen would recognize my guide.  Then I would had brought a gift to them of something that the tribesmen would find appealing, for example, in regular society you would bring a bottle of wine or something in the ordinary to show appreciation. The uncleanliness, filth, and the smell of the odor, I would not have reacted in an offended way.  I would had stood there, smiled, and nodded my head with the confidence thinking engrossed from their appearance standing half nude.  I would inform my guide to speak in their language and introduce me as a friend to the tribe by letting them know that I would be interested in learning and studying the tribesmen’s’ culture as much as possible by living with them for a year and a half.  I think that by having the tribesmen teaching me their way of living would give me a better insight and a better understanding their culture.  I would also thank them showing my appreciation, presenting them with those gifts.

Describe a personal experience you have had where you experienced culture shock. What components of culture were you shocked by?

I experienced culture shock when I lived in Ireland for eight years in the 90’s.  I moved there as I wanted to know a little bit about my relatives.  I remember I was welcomed with open arms as an American.  I was most shocked that Derry Northern Ireland was different from the South of Ireland.  Northern Ireland also had many problems and troubles with England and the Irish Republican Army (IRA) as Northern Ireland wanted their freedom from Britain.  I had a hard time understanding my relatives and how they were thinking and why most of them drank.  Going to the bars there I noticed their lifestyle was different than the United States, as they know how to have a good time without having drink involved.   I also noticed and had learned that Northern Ireland’s currency is used by England.  South of Ireland used their Irish currency money.  It also took me awhile to understand why the people in Northern Ireland dislike the police and how they felt that the police never help them.  I also saw young kids up all hours of the night throwing petrol bottle bombs because of the IRA.  I enjoyed the traditional Celtic music and foods there.  It took some time with everything that I had learned in Northern Ireland but I eventually able to accept and feel comfortable with.

Organic Foods

Ever since my mother was always shoving organic vegetables in my mouth, I did not learn to like the organic vegetables until I grown older.  Now, I could appreciate the rich flavors and qualities of the foods.  Organic gardening is on the rise because there is a high demand for it.  You see it in farmers markets for years and now they are showing up in the local grocery stores.  This is a big change for the last 10 years.  Organic food meant in the 1960s an 1970s that you were a stoner, or a hippie.  Not any more the label has been taken off the foods.  I personally like organic vegetables.  I like the carrots and the beets, which I do not like the old fashion way, the organic way.  The organic seems to make the high quality tastes of foods and is 100 percent safe for the body.  I think the world will be heading to an organic method of gardening and cooking.  Heading to this direction of organic methods will help people from getting sick by growing their own organic vegetables, a plus to organic vegetables is that they grow almost double in size as the normal vegetables, and the taste is richer.  Organic or not, gardening newbie, or a gardener who have been gardening for years, gardening information will provide the latest time tested information on organic gardening.  You could use this information right away.  This information to grow organic vegetables is safe for you, your family, and the environment.  Organic vegetables are not the only organic product available.  Organic whole wheat is also a substance to make organic bread, organic pie dough, and pie cakes among a few items.  As I was growing up, my mother had a wheat grinder so not only she had made organic wheat; she had made flour also such as, rice flour, corn flour, and potato flour.  Notice that there was no white flour mention, only because white flour whether it is organic or not, it is not good for you.  Organic garden burgers are being produced as well as soy or organic hot dogs, and chicken jerky, so there is even organic milk and ice cream for people who have sweet tooth.  You could understand there are many options in the organic world and there is more out every day.  Even though there are no pesticides on organic foods, you should still wash it to remove the dirty waste.  If you do not, you are taking a chance of hepatitis A and B, and jaundice.  In conclusion, Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, or any other larger city will have farmer’s markets, so if you do not feel like going to the grocery store, you could instead go to the farmer’s market to buy the vegetables.

Titanic Essay Outline

Titanic was one of the biggest historical stories ever told for many years that spread news around the globe, which turned out to be a devastating event to everybody.

1912, the RMS Titanic was a memorable event. The ship set sail on her maiden voyage from Southampton England to New York City. During its journey, disaster struck, and the ship hit an iceberg. The ship sank, leaving many people to die in the cold ocean. It must have been a horrifying experience to be left in the water at that moment. I had learned facts over the years, people researching about the sinking of the Titanic. The ship was 882 feet long, the size of three football fields. The damage of the ship, which the iceberg punctured, was approximately 205 foot long. There still are many questions in the air that people probably will never have answers. Why did they ignore Titanic’s wireless operator about the iceberg? If they condensed the amount of lifeboats from 32 to 20 lifeboats for their convenience, why did the ship’s crew overboard their passengers so that in case of an emergency, everyone on the ship will have a seat on the lifeboats? I believe that the crew members on the Titanic were not well prepared. I am sure that they panicked because there was only a short nick of time to abandon ship. It is amazing that the boats were only one third filled. The first boat was only filled with 28 people, and it could have carried approximately 64 people, which will save more lives. I think that if they remained calmed and worked together, they could have put more people on the lifeboats saving more lives. The fact is that there were more people than they thought. People remember the Titanic as the unsinkable. The question still lies, why did the Titanic sink? This question stills above all our heads. The White Star Line’s Titanic will be commemorating its 100-year anniversary next year.

Choose a topic for your final paper for week 9

The topic of my persuasive essay I chose, “In the United States, we do not need to plan for retirement. Social Security will cover our needs when we are retired.” Preparing for your financial decisions, you are able to plan out your retirement smoothly and effectively. When someone plans on retirement, they would receive a better deal rather than someone who did not plan for retirement. I also think that to an extent that Social Security only pays so much. While bills are increasing, the Social Security is staying the same. In years to come, items will cost more later than they do now. The most important thing about my retirement is that I want to make sure that my income lasts a lifetime otherwise I will fall into problems. If you want to prepare for yourself financially and live a comfortable retirement there are a few things you need to pay close attention. You want to establish a firm foundation. Then you secure your basic needs. You want to then, build up your wealth. Another point of view is that the younger crowd tends to party and play like there is no thought about tomorrow. Young ones spend all their money for their fun things. When you are younger, you feel as if you are invisible. The older you get, medical problems will occur fast, and you are going to have to pay for expensive medical bills that Medicare only covers so much, plus you have expensive Co-pays.

The plan for my essay paper is for the reader to understand and come to an agreement with me where I will be making my point of view. I will be expressing my agreements as well as disagreements and supporting what I have to say in it. The purpose of writing this essay paper is to achieve my goal to prove that people would make their own decisions about Social Security whether they are in doubt or not. People do wonder if they will still be alive by the time they retire. I will be developing enough evidence to support my persuasive essay with full confidence.

Challenges of a paper

Students are aware that when writing a paper for class, it can be challenging and overwhelming.  The importance for the student to understand clearly, they must comprehend what the topic of the essay is about.  If they do not understand it, they will face a much more difficult situation and that will cause stress and frustration.  Some students have a hard time knowing how to start off their paper, especially if the topic is new to them.  If the topic interests the student, he or she will find it somewhat easier.  If the topic do not   them, they have to focus more on the chosen topic.  They must keep in mind that writing in a paper there must be a topic sentence, a body, and a conclusion.  Their writing must be able to flow smoothly to capture the reader’s attention.  The students must have a clear understanding of the importance of plagiarism.  They have to make sure that they are not plagiarizing.  In order for them not to plagiarize, it is a must that students use their own words on their writing paper with proper citations, punctuations, or question marks that a lot of them tend to leave out in error.

Students are always going to come across with challenges, which they will have to overcome, so it is up to them to know the strategies to make their writing much easier and pleasant for them.  When I first started college, I had a hard time concentrating so one of my strategies that I found useful was to sit in a quiet area where I will not be distractedI always read my syllabus before the week starts so I could be aware of what is be expected.  I do not like working long hours on my assignments at a time because it burns me out.  To keep this from happening, I set a time schedule for my assignments to work on them little by little every day so I could be able to complete the work by the end of the week.  Staying focused is a need to deal with any confusion.  In order for the structure of the sentences to flow properly, pronouns and fragments should be used correctly.  Once I finish my paper, I would proofread it several times to make sure that it makes sense.  Writepoint is a good source to correct errors like past tense and present tense.

Time vs Writing

I am going to have to find some time to get into my novel writing.  I need to make that commitment on certain days to write.  I am in school now and I need to adjust time schedule with it.  The good thing about it is that my college is online which gives me the flexibility to work on my classes whenever I want rather than time schedules.  If I could set up certain times and days to do my writing then that's helping my time management which is a really good thing and tool to use.

Pattern Layout On Novel-making

A couple of months ago I was talking to my friend about my writing and we were discussing about how to write a layout of a novel. Everybody knows that you have to have a beginning, middle and an ending to a novel. So yesterday I took it upon myself to try out the pattern layout as we discussed. I would like to share the layout with you all.

Chapter 1
  1. notes
  2. notes
  3. notes
Chapter 2
  1. notes
  2. notes
  3. notes
Chapter 3
  1. notes
  2. notes
  3. notes
Chapter 4
  1. notes
  2. notes
  3. notes

The first thing to do when writing a novel is not to concentrate on names. You don't want to waste alot of time with the perfect name. That could always come later. Making notes is always important. Even if it doesn't make any sense or connection to the story-line. You could always keep that part of the notes for another story. Try these and see what you could come up with for your story.

So get writing!
